Dear Parents,
Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) is a collaborative effort among parents, teachers and students to
build a reading partnership between the home and the school. The PARP program encourages parents to
read with their children for at least 15 minutes daily for one week. Learning to read is the single most important
activity in a child’s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to
succeed in formal education. Life goes by so fast, and children grow up very quickly. PARP is a unique
opportunity to foster reading habits among the whole family and help children discover that reading can
be fun, while also developing their attention span, listening comprehension and vocabulary skills.
The 2011-12 PARP program will run for one week in each trimester, totaling three weeks for the
school year. In keeping with the school’s theme of “Be A Leader,” our PARP theme this year is:

READERS ARE LEADERS

Basic Rules for PARP
• Spend at least 15 minutes daily for one week each trimester reading with your child.
• You may read to your child, have your child read to you, or you may read quietly together. If
you are not available, your child may read with a grandparent, brother, sister, friend, etc.
• If you miss a day, you can make it up the next day.

Week 2 & 3 (Feb 6-Feb 10, 2012) (March 26-April 1)
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Do the reading with your child for 15 minutes per day for one week and fill out the reading log.
2. Students must hand in their completed and signed WEEK 2 reading logs to their teacher on Monday,
Feb 13. Remember to fill out the bottom portion of the form to be entered into a drawing for a free
book from the Spring Scholastic Book Fair, to be held on May. Students will receive one entry form
per week. There will be one final winner per class, to be announced at the completion of Week 3
(Mar. 26-April 1).
